The record for the longest U.S. government shutdown may be broken
The U.S. government shutdown, which was widely believed to last only two or three weeks, is now turning into a major crisis in Washington and is likely to last until November.
"To end the shutdown, either the White House will negotiate an agreement or the Democrats will compromise. But so far, there are no signs of either of these." Analysts at Beacon Policy Advisors said in a report, "The current government shutdown is expected to become the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history."
The partial government shutdown that began this month had lasted 20 days as of Monday; the longest shutdown in U.S. history was 35 days, occurring nearly seven years ago during Trump's first term as president. Forecast markets showed on Friday that the current shutdown could last about 41 days, up from just 14 days two weeks ago.
